Sustainable Livelihoods & Rural Economy

Gram Sudhar Samiti (GSS) has been at the forefront of strengthening rural livelihoods through community-led, sustainable, and climate-resilient interventions across Madhya Pradesh. With a legacy of over three decades, GSS works closely with small and marginal farmers, women collectives, and rural communities to create diversified income opportunities while ensuring ecological balance.

GSS has actively promoted millet-based cultivation, not just as a source of income but as a pathway to nutritional security and climate-resilient agriculture. More than 3,000 farmers have been supported through vegetable cultivation initiatives, enabling consistent household income and improved food security. In addition, 200+ families have been supported through livestock-based livelihood interventions, strengthening their economic resilience.

Under horticulture (wadi) development, GSS has enhanced the income of over 1,000 families by developing plantations across 1,000 acres of land, creating long-term and sustainable livelihood assets. The organisation has also pioneered rural tourism initiatives in 16 villages across 7 districts, where more than 40 homestays have been establishedβ€”benefiting over 500 families through tourism-linked income generation.

To further promote local entrepreneurship, GSS has facilitated the development of 100+ micro-enterprises, particularly among women and youth, enabling them to engage in value-added activities, local production, and small-scale businesses. Through its integrated approachβ€”combining natural resource management, capacity building, market linkages, and community institution strengthening (SHGs & FPOs)β€”GSS continues to build self-reliant rural economies that are inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
